Alfred Z. Smith, 99, died peacefully on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at his home in Sun City, Arizona. A former resident of Fort Wayne and Traverse City, Michigan. Born in North Manchester to the late Thomas W. Smith and Lesta A. (Simmons) Smith. He was a butcher at Keener Packing Company and the Marhoffer Packing Company here in Fort Wayne. He was part owner of Tannehill & DeYoung Packing Company in Traverse, Michigan. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and his favorite pastime was to spend it with his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Janice Smith of Chicago, Marjorie Foster of Sun City; and Joan Gospodareck of Huntertown; brother, Max E. Smith of Fort Wayne; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; great great grandbaby due in Sept.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 72 years, Isabell Smith, in 2005; daughters, Judith Schaner and Nancy Flaherty.
Service is 11:30 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with calling one hour prior. He will be laid to rest at Covington Memorial Gardens. Memorials are to the American Cancer Society.
