Billie George Johnson, "Bill", 83, of New Haven, IN passed away on Thursday, September 3 rd at his home in New Haven, IN, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 7, 1937 in Tazwell, TN to Elmer and Edith (Earl) Johnson. He was the oldest of their five children. He went into the Navy in 1957, serving one term. After his honorable discharge he returned to Fort Wayne, IN where he met his wife, Shelby (Smith) Johnson. They were married for 51 years at the time of his death. He worked as a mechanic in the Navy and continued in this work through the rest of his career, retiring as a truck mechanic from Essex garage in 1999. He always said he was "a jack of all trades, but a master of none". But, he was able to do anything he set his hand to and was self-taught in many trades. He was the first to lend a hand when family or friends needed help. He greatly enjoyed his grandkids and great grandkids. He and his wife were long standing attenders of Avalon Missionary Church. Billie is survived by his wife: Shelby (Smith) Johnson of New Haven, IN; his children: Merle (Genise) Robinson of Findlay, OH, Robert Robinson of Fort Wayne, IN, Clifford Johnson of South Mills, NC, Michelle Gray of Cleveland, OH, Georgia Johnson, of North Carolina, and Billie (Tim) Wunderlich of Fort Wayne, IN; his grandchildren: Leon Gray, Reggie Gray, Ryan Gray, Austin Wunderlich, Jacob Wunderlich, Chelsea Kidder, Cody Wunderlich, and Jason Bewley; his 15 great grandchildren; and his siblings: Eloise (Phil) Rule of Lancaster, PA, Betty (John) Rogers of Huntington, IN, Margaret Johnson of Roanoke, IN; and sister-in-law: Jeri Johnson of Fort Wayne, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer and Edith Johnson; brother: Donald Johnson; and his grandsons: Isaiah Robinson and Terrance Nelson. Funeral service is 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home 8408 Covington Rd. with visitation from noon until time of service.
