Obituary

Carlyle W. "Bud" Pio, died Tuesday Sept. 4, 2007 at Paulding County Hospital where he had been a patient for six days. He was born May 30, 1912 in Payne, OH, the son of William and Myrtle (Skinner) Pio. He spent his childhood in Payne, and the last year of his life. He was founder of Pio Markets in Fort Wayne. In 1937, he bought a meat market from Don Hall and in 1944, he opened a second store on S. Calhoun Street and changed the name from Hall''s Market to Pio''s Market. He then opened a third store on E. State Street. In 1977 he sold the S. Calhoun Street business to his son-in-law Don Gorney. He spent some of his retirement years at Pretty Lake in Northeastern Indiana and Avon Park, FL. He was a private pilot and a charter member of the first Flying Club at Smith Field in Fort Wayne and was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Fort Wayne Aviation Museum. He leaves behind daughters, Barbara Gorney, of Fort Wayne, and Sue Kratzman, of Corunna; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; an older sister, Cecile Neuenschwander, of Payne, OH; brother, Robert Pio, of Avon Park, Fl; and an uncle Russell Skinner, of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Genevieve (Jones) in 1977 and a son-in-law Don Gorney in 1977.
