Carmen M. Sgro, 90, died Sunday, January 13, 2019. He was first generation born in America on May 4, 1928 in Ft. Wayne, IN to the late Anthony and Anna Sgro. Carmen was an Electrical Equipment Salesman for 30 years and retired from the United States Post Office after 12 years service. A disabled Army veteran of the Korean War 101 Airborne Div, he was awarded a Purple Heart for gunshot wounds at Hwachon Reservoir and received a Bronze Star. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. His passions included his grandchildren, fixing things, animals and the outdoors including hunting and fishing. The family would like to thank all those who cared for Carmen: nurses, aides and doctors at the VA hospital, Lutheran Hospital, Coventry Meadows Assisted Living, Lutheran Life Villages - Pine Valley, and Heartland Hospice.
Surviving are his children; David (Diane) Owens, Nancy (Dave) Robbins, Ted (Sally) Sgro, daughter-in-law Arleta Owens, sister, Geny Krouse, 7 grandchildren, Renee (John), Benjamin,Tyler (Ashley), Erin (Tommy), Joshua (Sabrina), Antonino (Lauren), Angie (Doug, deceased), 11 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. In 1967, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Dietel) Sgro, who he lost at a young age, his son Joseph Owens, October 30, 2018, his sister Grace Fulkerson, and brothers-in-law Gene Krouse and Wayne Fulkerson.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday January 19, 2019 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church 1126 S. Barr St. Ft. Wayne, IN with viewing from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. There is also viewing Friday January 18, 2019 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home 8408 Covington Rd. from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Preferred memorials are to St. Paul's Lutheran Ladies Aid, or Allen County S.P.C.A. or Hope for Animals or D.A.V.
