Obituary

Donald Eugene Helm, 95, died Saturday, October 10, 2015 the Town House. Born in Fort Wayne, he was the son of the late William F and Dorothy K (Schultz) Helm. Donald was an educator in the Indiana public schools for 35 years. He retired from Whitko High School, in 1986. He also taught at Huntertown High School for 9 years. He served as an officer in the Navy during WWII in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters. At the end of the war he was commanding officer of the ship LST 981. He participated in four invasions. He graduated from South Side High School, in 1938. He also earned a Bachelor Degree from Butler University, a Master Degree from Ball State University, and a Doctor Degree from Indiana University. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, a past president of the Foster Park Lions Club, a past president of the SPCA, and an officer of the Covington Dells Association. He was a member of the F&A Order of Masons, and a member of the American Legion Post #82.

He is survived by two nieces, Jan Benner and Barbara Naughton; one nephew, Don Helm; and their families.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy (Carmichael) Helm; and his brother, Richard F Helm of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Graveside Service is 11 a.m., Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 6600 Covington Road. In lieu of flowers preferred memorials are to Rho Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity Scholarship Fund, Inc., P.O. Box 78273, Indianapolis, IN, 46278.
