Obituary

Donald Ray Rush, 89, lived a life as full and vibrant as the stories he so loved to tell. Born on June 23, 1936, and raised humbly in Mentone, Indiana, he was the youngest of eight children—a beginning that shaped his resilience, humility, and deep appreciation for family. From those early days, Don carried forward a spirit of determination and warmth that would define his life and touch everyone he met.

Don made his home in several places over the years—Lafayette and Fort Wayne, Indiana; the sunny shores of Ixtapa, Mexico; and the peaceful waters of Indian Lake in Corunna, Indiana. No matter where he lived, he built community. He had a remarkable gift for making friends wherever he went—whether with neighbors, caddies on the course, or waitresses at his favorite dining spots. These people quickly became part of his extended circle naturally drawn to his kindness, hearty laugh, and unmistakable, rambunctious charm.

At the center of his world was his beloved wife, June Rush, with whom he shared 61 devoted years of marriage. Together, they built a life grounded in love, laughter, and partnership. Don’s familiar and affectionate phrase, “now, June,” was often the prelude to his playful rebuttal or thoughtful perspective —one of the many small, cherished moments that defined their life together.

Professionally, Don excelled in the insurance industry earning the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic, attention to detail, and sound judgment. He was a steady source of guidance and wisdom for his family, offering direction and strength in both ordinary and challenging times. He was a proud member of the Scottish Rite and Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and he supported many worthwhile organizations, including the Evans Scholars Foundation. His generosity and community spirit were quiet but impactful, reflecting a life lived with purpose and care for others. He was humbled by being awarded the high civilian honor in Indiana, The Sagamore of the Wabash, presented by Governor Evan Bayh for his “Humanity in Living, his Loyalty in Friendship, his Wisdom in Council, and his Inspiration in Leadership.”

Outside of work, Don embraced life with enthusiasm. A faithful Purdue fan, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his team whether football or basketball. He found joy on the golf course with friends, in quiet moments fishing with his nephews, and in the simple pleasure of being outdoors working on projects or relaxing. He kept his mind sharp with daily crossword puzzles, sudoku, reading newspapers, and a steady rotation of John Grisham novels. Ever the storyteller, he delighted in recounting life’s moments—often describing them as “ironical,” a word he made entirely his own.

Don was a loyal husband, uncle, brother, friend, neighbor, and co-worker. He valued connection deeply and treasured time spent with his nephews and their families, as well as dinners and gatherings with friends. His presence brought energy, humor, and a sense of belonging to those around him.

Don is survived by his beloved wife, June Rush, who was the heart of his world. He will be missed terribly by his family and all who knew him, but he will be remembered fondly for his booming laugh, his gift for storytelling, and the spirited, unforgettable personality that made every moment with him a little brighter. In the many “special” twists of life he so enjoyed pointing out, it is perhaps most fitting that while he is gone, his stories—and the joy he brought—will live on.

According to Don’s wishes, no funeral service is planned. The family will have a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
