Edward Wayne Peterson, 88 of Fort Wayne passed away Sunday, March 8, 2026. Ed was born on April 14, 1937, in Fort Wayne to the late George and Maxine Peterson. He married Norma Shipley, sharing 62 years together before her passing on January 5, 2019.
Ed was a lifelong resident of Fort Wayne and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He continued his education at General Electric's Apprentice School, graduating in 1960, and later earned his degree from Purdue University in 1973. Ed worked as a design and application engineer for General Electric for 42 years. During his career he became a member of the Quarter Century Club before retiring in 1998.
Ed was a member of the Purdue Alumni Association and Trinity English Lutheran Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and looked forward each year to traveling to Canada with Norma and various family members to fish for walleye.
A talented athlete, Ed enjoyed playing baseball, softball, and basketball. He especially loved working with and coaching his children and grandchildren in their sports. Known for being a stickler for the fundamentals, he took great pride in helping them learn and grow and attended as many of their events as he could.
He is survived by his children, Mark (Marcia) Peterson, Barry (Patricia) Peterson, Jerry (Amber) Peterson, Kim (Tom) Heckman and Cindy Headford; 14 grandchildren 35 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma; two sisters, one brother and a son-in-law Rob Headford.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road Fort Wayne, Indiana. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Friday, March 13, 2026, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Covington Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Trinity English Lutheran Church.
