Fred Leonard Schmeling, 78, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at The Waters in Fort Wayne, IN. Born in Fort Wayne, IN, Fred was a son of the late Elmer and Helen (Jackson) Schmeling. He was a graduate of Concordia Lutheran High School and earned his master's degree from Concordia Lutheran Teachers College in Nebraska. He taught for Fort Wayne Community School District for over 30 years, until his retirement. Fred enjoyed playing Pinochle, Euchre and Bridge. He also liked to golf and fish. Surviving are his children, Rory (Melissa) Schmeling and Wendy (Christopher) Smith; grandchildren, Reilly, Hailey, Rachel and Taylor; sister, Marnell (Deryle) Bode and Mary Springer; brothers, Jack Schmeling and Jerry Schmeling. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Richard Springer. All services will be private. Burial in Covington Memorial Gardens. Arrangements in care of Covington Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Stillwater Hospice or an Education Charity of donor's choice.
