Gerald F. "Gib" Imel, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2009 in his home at Sycamore Village. Born November 12, 1920 in Jay County (Portland, IN), Gib is the son of Thomas M. and Chloe Tillie Imel. He served in the Army during WW II. He was in sales most of his life, selling class rings and graduation announcements to schools throughout Indiana. Gib was very athletic. He excelled at basketball at Lafayette Central and Elmhurst High Schools. After his playing days, he carried on his love for the game by officiating high school and small college basketball for over 30 years. The last game he refereed was at the state finals at Hinkle Field House in Indianapolis in 1971. After retirement, the IHSAA hired Gib to observe new upcoming basketball officials in Indiana. Gib was also an outstanding amateur golfer. He participated in many tournaments locally and throughtout the state. Often referred to as the "Gibber", one of his favorite sayings was "keep it down the middle." He''s going to be missed by the loving and caring staff and his friends at Sycamore Village. He''s survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha (Fogwell) Imel; three sons, Robert (Joan) and Randy of Fort Wayne, and Rick of Roanoke; two daughters, Sharon Melton Hall (Dave) of Fort Wayne and Cheri Cote (Chris) of Morrison, CO; seven grandsons, Rick, Rod and Scott Melton, Chad & Ryan Imel, Conor & Kyle Cote; three granddaughters, Jodie Winn, Hannah & Taylor Imel; three great grandchildren, Ridge Imel, Madison & Cameron Winn; He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas & Tillie Imel; 12 brothers & sisters, of which he was the youngest. He belonged to the Mason Lodge and was also a Shriner. He and his wife attended Waynedale Methodist Church. Funeral service Saturday 11 a.m. with calling one hour prior at Covington Memorial Funeral Home 8408 Covington Rd. Calling also Friday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials to Heartland Hospice or Riley''s Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis.
