Harry Smith Thornburg, 92, Fort Wayne, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Lutheran Hospital. Born Aug. 11, 1923, in Monaca, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Elva (Eaton) Thornburg. After serving in the Merchant Marine in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II, he graduated from Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne. He worked as a Westinghouse engineer in Cleveland, Ohio, and Bloomington, Ind. In 1994 he returned to Fort Wayne, where he was a member of Calvary Third Presbyterian Church. He served earlier as a Presbyterian elder in North Olmsted, Ohio, and Bloomington, Ind.
He is survived by a son, Jerry Thornburg of Berlin, Germany; a sister-in-law, Beulah Smith of Eagle Point, Oregon; a nephew and niece, Richard and Marguerite Wire of Huntington; close friends, Larry and Pauline Gerber and Clairus Dew of Fort Waynel; and many other nephews, nieces and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mildred D. (Smith) Thornburg; a son, Bruce; a brother, George D. Thornburg; a sister, Mary "Kay" (Thornburg) Aughinbaugh; and a nephew, Todd Aughinbaugh; and close friends, Vanda Stirn and Betty Holbrook.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016 at Covington Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with calling one hour prior. Donations may be made in his memory to Love INC of Huntington Co., 715 Byron St., Huntington, IN 46750.
