Obituary

Herschel Wagner "Smitty" Smith Sr., 94, died on Friday, November 26, 2010 at Memorial Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas as a result of complications caused by a fall. Born in 1916, in McCollinsville, Ohio, he was the son of Guy and Florence Smith. He moved to Fort Wayne in his 20''s where he lived for over 50 years. He relocated to the Texas hill country, and then his final two years were spent in Spring, Texas. He served in World War II as a Navy Seabee stationed in the Philippines. As a civilian, he worked for 43 years at International Harvester, Fort Wayne, where he retired in 1976. "He loved to tinker in his garage building anything from a flower pot to a go cart to a single seat airplane. If it had a plan, he could build it. If it did not have a plan, he could draw the plan then build it. Smitty was talented with his hands and tools" He is survived by his current wife of 25 years, Edna "Maxine" Smith , Spring, Texas; stepsons, Jerry (Judy) Sullivan, Spring, Texas and Scott (Kathy) Sullivan, Cypress, Texas; daughter, Linda (John) Gordon, Cleveland, Texas; sons, Herschel W. "Sonny" (Linda) Smith Jr., Lisle, ILL and Ron Smith, Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Mike Gordon, Suzanne Smith-Popma and Kelsey Smith; great-grandson, Cameron Gordon; and brother, Harold Smith, St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorene Smith and grandson, John H. Gordon. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, December 4, 2010 8408 Covington Rd. Ft. Wayne, IN with Pastor Bob Arenobine officiating. Burial in Covington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
