Obituary

Howard Walton Zimmerman, Jr was a resident of Roanoke, Indiana from 1968 until his death in March 2013.
He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Howard Zimmerman Sr. and Maria Moening Zimmerman. In 1958, Howard graduated from Walnut Hills High School, Cincinnati OH where he was a state champion swimmer, editor of the school newspaper and an Eagle Scout. In 1961 he received his BS in Economics from Washington and Lee in Lexington Virginia. From 1961-1963 he was an officer in the US Army Intelligence Corps. (Class of 61, Fort Holabird)

Working and attending school Howard spent 5 years with Manufacturers Hanover Trust in NYC in the credit and commercial real estate mortgage department. And in 1965 he received his MBA from New York University Stern School of Business. In 1968, Howard was elected to assistant vice president of Indiana Bank, commercial loan division, and moved from New Jersey to live in Roanoke, Indiana. He later was head of Commercial Loan Division of Anthony Wayne Bank and CEO of Gateway Bank/Indiana.

In the 70s Howard was also head of the School of Business at St. Francis College where he also taught real estate courses. When he wasn't teaching, working in finance, or on his farm, Howard was an avid boater, sailor, water and snow skier, a master gardener and a private pilot. He and his wife Virginia were married for 31 years before he passed away. They were fortunate to have friends and family in many cities, including Fort Wayne and Roanoke Indiana, Florida, Virginia, San Antonio, San Francisco, Chicago, upstate New York, and Indian River and Burt Lake Michigan where they spent their summer weekends.

One of his regrets as a young man was that his mother never learned to swim. In lieu of a service or flowers, Howard's wish was for any donations to go to swimming lessons as part of the Strong Kids Campaign at the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne.http://www.fwymca.org/strong_kids_campaign.php

Howard has now joined that crew of perpetual sailors but his legacy of stories and adventures will continue to live.
