James A. Borcherding, 88, died Saturday August 31, 2013. James was born January 13, 1925 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late James F. and Marie Borcherding. Jim was raised in Monroeville, Indiana, attending Jackson Township grade school and graduated from Monroeville High School. Jim was a member of the Oak Grove Church and he worked at the VA Hospital for many years in the maintenance and engineering. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving with Patton''s 3rd Army and the 775th Field Artillery Unit as a Corporal. Following the war, he married Thelma "Missy" May Knox January 17, 1948 residing in Monroeville for several years. Jim and Missy eventually moved to New Haven and then on to Columbia City enjoying many wonderful years and lifelong friendships within Stable Acres. A proud American and member of the "Greatest Generation". As a Christian one of Jim''s favorite verses was the 23rd Psalm.
Surviving are his children, John (Pat) and Kenneth (Diane) Borcherding, Faye (Jon Huber) Borcherding, Tina (David) Winterroth, sisters, Dorothy Baumgardner, South Whitley, Patricia (Ked) Ballinger, Sharon (Bill) Fawley, Donna Hughes, Marilyn (Jerry) MunGovan, Fort Wayne. His sister-in-law Johanna (Knox) and Von Hoffacker of Hoagland. 10 grandchildren Cory Borcherding, Michelle Borcherding Arnett, Tracy Borcherding Sommerio, Nicole Winterroth, Jacy Borcherding Schneider, Amanda Winterroth, Brandon Winterroth, Kellie Borcherding, Emily Winterroth, Jordan Borcherding-Huber and 15 great-grandchildren Ryan Arnett, Jacob Sommerio, Karsen Leoni, Nathan Arnett, Casey Leoni, Maddyson Baumgartner, Annalise Sommerio, Aiden Baumgartner, Abel Guibry, Coleman Leonpacher, Abigail Holley, Megan Holley, Quinn Holley, Cooper Borcherding and Samantha Winterroth, additionally, Jim is survived by several much loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma M. Borcherding in 2008, sister-in-law Mary (Knox) and her husband Harold McBride.
Service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday September 8, 2013 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home 8408 Covington Rd. with calling 1 hour prior to service. There is also calling Saturday 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Covington Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, Jim requested donation to either Parkview Home Healthcare and Hospice or Whitley County Animal Shelter.
