John W. Smith, 62, of Decatur, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in Ossian.

He was born on November 13, 1963, in Fort Wayne to the late Donald E. and Linda D. (Dever) Smith. John honorably served in the United States Marine Corps.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, and listening to audiobooks. He especially loved spending time with his family and his canine companion, Bear. He had a special place in his heart for children and was affectionately known as “Uncle John.” With his laid-back attitude and easygoing nature, John took life as it came and simply rolled with things.

Surviving are his brothers, Shayne Smith and Chad (Dee) Smith; his sister, Patia Smith; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jody Smith.
