John J. Welborn, 93, of Fort Wayne, died on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Timbercrest in North Manchester. He was born in Granger, to the late Virgil and Hazel (Austin) Welborn. John grew up on a farm near Bourbon, he graduated from Bourbon High School and went off to serve his county in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was stationed in Aleutian Islands, Alaska. He then retired from International Harvester after 36 years of service. John was an active member in the Lincolnshire Church of the Brethren. He played on the sports teams, baseball and basketball. At Smith and Green Street Church, he taught the young married Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 72 years, Marcile E. Welborn; daughter, Janice Ward of Fort Wayne; brother, Charles (Marilyn) Welborn of Argos; grandchildren, Michael J. Ward, Laura (David) Revard, Chad W. (Gail) Ward, Leslie (Mark) Britton, Sean Ward and Robin (Gregg) Stepp; nine great grandchildren, Samantha, Kyle, Jaimie, Sara, Julianna, Lincoln, Zackary, Zane and Luke; and three great great grandchildren, Kaitlin, Lily and Ian.
He was preceded in death by a son in law, William Ward, in 2008; five brothers, Carl, Glen, David, LeRoy and Everett; and two sisters, Mary (Richard) Bernaert and Lucille (William) Peckham.
Funeral service is 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Covington Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with calling two hours prior. Then there will be a Memorial service 2:30 p.m., Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Timbercrest Senior Living, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, with a gathering after for family and friends. He will be laid to rest at Covington Memorial Gardens. Preferred memorials are to the church or Timbercrest.
