Obituary

Larry Pond,of Westfield, forerly of Fort wayne, died Thursday in Jacksonville,FL,where he was vacationing. Born in FortWayne, Larry was graduated from South Side High school and the University of Evansville, later making his home in Evansville,Louisville, KY,and Cedar Rapids, IA, before returning to Indiana in 1994. Because of recent health problems, Larry had recorded several thoughts about how he would like to be remembered. Excerpts from his writings follow: "Throughout his life, Larry Pond drew happiness from family, friends, clients, an afternoon on the golf course or a baseball game. The life he loved has come to a close....Though his professional achievements were many, larry will be remembered for a caring personality that lifted the spirits of those he touched throughout his life time. His love for his daughts, Jennifer and Lindsey, cannot be measured. "When he could not be with family or friends, Larry found great joy in visiting patients at nursing homes and volunteering at the North United Methodist Church soup kitchen in Indianapolis, known as Bread and Bowl. He had been a member at North since 1994... After extensive traing, Larry was commissioned a Stephen Minister at North in 2007. In that role, he served as a caregiver to people in crisis. "Professionally, Larry considered himself first and foremost a journalist, though later in life, in 1997, he left the news business to form his own television talent management business, The pond Group. In its 10 years in existence, The Pond Group managed the careers of dozens of anchors and repoters throughout the country... "While still a student at the University of Evansville in the 1960s, Larry worked part time as an intern/reporter at the Scripps-Howard Evansville Press. He later became the state editor of the The Press before leaving newspaper work to become news director and anchorman at WFIE-TV in Evansville in 1969. In 1977, he became news director at WAVE-TV in Louisville, and in 1980, he became senior broadcast news consultant at Frank Magid Assoc, based in Cedar Rapids,IA. "Among the stations he consulted was WRTV in Indianapolis. In 1994, WRTV hired Larry away from Magid and he became its news director. Later, he left broadcasting to form his own talent company." Larry was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon, in 1977; motherm Ruby L. Pond, in 2003; and father, Carl Pond in 2005.
