IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leonard Lowell
Harlan
August 31, 1927 – May 5, 2020
Leonard Harlan, 92, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2020. Born in Fort Wayne, he was a son to the late Lytle and Beatrice Harlan.
He is survived by daughter, Laura (Dan) Welklin and Marilyn (Mark) Poffenberger; grandchildren, Audrey Kyle, Joe Welklin, Emily Hanson, Russell Poffenberger and Steve Poffenberger; and great grandchildren, Zander and Everly Hanson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Elaine; and sons, Jeffrey and Ronald.
Leonard enlisted in the Navy after high school and served in both World War 2 and the Korean War. A musician with a great tenor voice, he shared his talents with his church for many years. He played the saxophone in jazz bands while in the service, wherever he was stationed. He also sang in barbershop quartets and the Mizpah Shrine Chanters.
Leonard and his wife Barbara Elaine were one of the founding members of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Len was their go-to craftsman making the oak pulpit for the pastor and any other item made from wood.
He worked for over 40 years as an engineer at Indiana and Michigan Electric Co. In the neighborhood where he built his family's home, the Harlan yard was known for the horseshoe pits, homemade ice-skating rink and even a small golf course.
During his retirement he volunteered for the Red Cross delivering blood at all hours as needed to all who called within a 3-hour drive from Fort Wayne. Also, as a Shriner, he escorted many children in need from Fort Wayne to Chicago.
Private services were held for the family. He was laid to rest at Covington Memorial Gardens.
