Mary "Joanne" Downing, 79, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Parkview Regional Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN. Born in Garrett, IN, Joanne was a daughter to the late Louie A. and Azelene S. (Knopp) Downing. She was a 1962 graduate of Elmhurst High School. Joanne then attended Indiana University where she double majored and was a part of the Singing Hoosiers and Chi Omega sorority. She earned her master's degree in English literature from the University of St. Francis. Her work history included teaching 8th grade English, teaching piano, and substitute teaching. Joanne was on the board of directors for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Women's Committee for three years. She was a talented seamstress, loved cats and enjoyed listening to talk radio. Surviving are her nephews, Mark Downing and Timothy (Brenda) Downing; and nieces, Kimberly (David) Bennett and Emily (David) Downing Mallick; eight great nieces and nephews; and one great-great nephew. Also surving are several cousins including Rick and Marla Ringer and sister-in-laws Nancy Downing and Barbara Downing. Joanne was preceded in death by her brothers, Roger Downing and Ronald Downing.
