Max L. Lane, 84 of Fort Wayne passed away on April 21, 2026, in his hometown of Fort Wayne after battling dementia for many years. He was born on February 22, 1942. Max lived a full and purposeful life marked by dedication, generosity, and an enduring love for his family and faith.
Max was a career fireman who served the Fort Wayne Fire Department with unwavering commitment before retiring after many years of honorable service. Known to those close to him as a workaholic, he continued to live life with the same passion and vigor that defined his professional career. His interests were as varied as they were joyful; among his treasured hobbies were collecting and caring for classic cars, boating, riding motorcycles, and enjoying leisurely drives on his golf cart. He also found pleasure in visiting amusement parks and spending time fishing.
A charter member of Sonrise Church, Max's faith was a cornerstone of his identity. He was a devoted follower of Jesus and a man of great generosity, always willing to give his time and support to others. His dedication extended beyond the church community as he was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, embodying principles of brotherhood and service throughout his life.
Max’s greatest joy, however, was found in his family. He was the beloved husband of Claudia, his partner in life for 55 years since their marriage on March 6, 1971. Together, they raised a family that remains close-knit and loving. Max is survived by his children Laurie Lane of Grand Haven, Michigan; Jennifer and her husband Bob Hahnert of Fort Wayne; Brad Lane of Decatur; Mark Lane of Port Richey, Florida; and Dawn Chaney of Nokomis, Florida. His legacy also lives on through his eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren, who cherished their grandfather.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Esther Lane, and his brother, Neil Lane.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46804. The service celebrating Max's life will begin at 6:00 pm. Max will be laid to rest privately at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to Sonrise Church, or to the charity of your choice.
Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Coventry Meadows for seven years of loving care.
