Mildred Kuhns, also known as Mom K, Grandma Kuhns, and Nanny entered into eternal life October 31, 2015. Mildred began her life in Mooreland, Indiana July 25, 1926 with parents Roy and Mary (Hitchcock) Wheeldon. Mildred attended grade school and high school in Mooreland. She enjoyed her youth on a farm. As a teenager, she met the love of her life, Charles (Charlie) Kuhns. Both being young and penniless a date night for the couple began after Charlie rode his bicycle 26 miles to see his sweetheart Mildred. They would sit and hold hands a bit and then Charlie had to start his long bike ride back home. They were the perfect fit as a young couple. Charlie and Mildred married February 20, 1944. The couple first purchased a farm in Tunker, Indiana with high hopes of farming. This farm was lost to a fire. The determined couple moved to Fort Wayne and built a home. They resided in Fort Wayne 25 years and loved their home and raising their family here. At retirement, Charlie and Mildred moved to Lakeland FL and soaked up the FL sunshine 19 years. Charlie passed away October 11, 2006. In 2010, Mildred moved back to Indiana and spent her remaining time at Peabody Retirement Community. She enjoyed crocheting lap blankets for others and making crocheted dish cloths. She loved to read books written by Eugenia Price. She felt Ms. Price made history and life through the characters in her novels vivid. Mildred was known to not only read one of Ms. Prices books once but 6 to 8 times each. Her love to read and crochet continued to her last day.
Mildred remained a faithful member of the Lakeland Grace Brethren Church. Her spirit and love is carried on by her loving family. Son, Roy D. (Gina) Kuhns, Daughter, Sheila L.
