IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Philip Martin
Shank
October 26, 1943 – November 25, 2019
Philip Martin Shank, 76, passed away at home on Monday, November 25, 2019. Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, he was a son to the late, Paul and Edna Shank. He had worked for Honeywell Systems as a computer technician for over 40 years. Philip then dedicated his retirement to volunteering at church and in his community. A devoted family man and a helping hand to strangers-in-need, Phil touched the lives of many.
After high school, Phil went on to earn an electronics technician degree from Allegheny Technical Institute.
Philip met his future wife Carol in 1965 while he was working as a 1W volunteer at the Grenfell Mission in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, Canada. Phil ran the radio that directed a floatplane that serviced the medical needs of dozens of communities scattered across hundreds of square miles of the Canadian eastern seaboard. Carol was a nurse.
After spending their early married life in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, Phil and Carol moved to Adrian, Michigan, where they would live for the next twenty-three years.
Eldest son Roger was born in 1969, followed by Daniel in 1972.
In addition to his family life, Phil devoted time to working on various boards at his church, the Christian school, and various civic groups.
In 1992, the economic downturn saw Phil following his job to Fort Wayne, Indiana. New neighbors and friends followed, as well as a transfer to Emmanuel Community Church.
In 2011, Phil retired. He then began a time of volunteer work. Several years were spent as an aid in ECC's A.B.L.E. Ministries for children with special needs. He also spent several years as a volunteer driver for Homebound Meals.
After battling prostate and bladder cancer, Philip went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 25, 2019, his 53 rd wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol J. (Rahn) Shank; sons, Roger (Melinda) Shank and Daniel Shank; granddaughters, Olivia, Emme, Sophie and Claire; siblings, Lowell (Darlene White) Shank, Stephen (Donna Snyder) Shank, Dottie (Duane) Kauffman and Carol (Dan) Wolfer.
