Robert A. Durga, Sr., of Fort Wayne, was called home by his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, March 30, 2011. Born in Muskegon, Michigan, to the late, Julius & Martina (Grant) Durga on November 19, 1932. Bob served his country during the Korean War in the Army after graduating high school. He was in Korea when the truce was signed. He frequently told his family and friends about the night sky being lit up from the firing of the big guns to celebrate. Bob was very proud of his military service. Some of the best years of his life. He was a member of the Indiana Chapter One of the Korean War Veterans where he served as the Sgt. of Arms and American Legion Post 82. He worked 36 years at the S.D. Warren Paper Mill and working his way up, retiring as a supervisor. Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved working with wood, making many beautiful things for family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, who he married on June 25, 1955, in Muskegon, Michigan, Juanita (Deater) Durga; children, Robert Jr. (Crystal) Durga and Michelle (David) Therkelsen; grandchildren, Cassie (Andrew) Conforti, Aubree, Maddison, Alexa, Chloe Scheele, Jasper and Heather Therkelsen, Robert Durga III, and Veronica Jackson; great grandsons, Chase and Graham; sisters in law, Avis and Mary Deater.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Durga; brothers in law, George, Robert, Albert Deater and Robert Scholtens; sisters in law, Lois Scholtens, Lula Deater and Maxine Durga; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Service is 1 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with calling one hour prior. Calling is also 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. He will be laid to rest at Covington Memorial Gardens with military rites. Memorials are to the Korean War Veterans.
