Robert C. "Bob" Sommer, 82 of Zanesville, passed away Tuesday December 16, 2008. Born on May 18, 1926 in Peru, Indiana, Bob was the son of Emil and Flora Sommer who preceded him in death. In 1944, Bob had joined the US Army as a paratrooper where he was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Luzon Campaign, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and had worked for US Rubber, Pillsbury and K-Mart. Bob is survived by his children Thomas (Wanda) Sommer, Vicky (Dale) Best, Robert (Rebekah) and Jeffrey Sommer; brother Thurman Glassburn; sister Claudia Pyzyana; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Artina, three brothers, three sisters, and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11:00am Saturday at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Rd with calling there one hour prior. Calling will also be there on Friday between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. Memorials can be made to Concordia Lutheran Church.
