Ruth Greiner Spear, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012 at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home. Born October 4, 1917 in Fort Wayne, she was the oldest of Theodore P. and Agnes Meyer Greiner. Ruth graduated from South Side High School and attended Indiana University where she met her future husband, Jean William Spear. In 1943 while Jean interned at the University of Chicago, Ruth did research for the Manhattan Project under the direction of Dr. Enrico Fermi. After living in Parris Island, SC during the war, Ruth and Jean returned to the Midwest living first in South Whitley and then Fort Wayne. Ruth was the business manager for Jean''s dental practice. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter CP, Daughters of the Nile and was appointed by the County Commissioners to the first Allen County Civil Preparedness Commission. She was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church; its Altar Guild and Southwest Circle. She was a member of the Fort Wayne Country Club and its Nine Hole Ladies Golf group and volunteered for Homebound Meals. She was a devoted grandmother to her four grandchildren.
Surviving are her three daughters, Elizabeth (Don) Hooley of Amelia Island, Florida, Ann (Tim) Borne and Margaret (John) Feighner both of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, J. Spencer Feighner of Fort Wayne, Katherine Borne of Boston, MA., Dr. Elizabeth Feighner of Charlotte, NC and Christine Borne of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Paul Greiner of Alexandria, VA and Norman Greiner of Rock Hill, SC; 13 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jean William Spear, in 2009.
Memorial Service will be at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 West Wayne Street, with a reception immediately following. She was laid to rest at Covington Memorial Gardens. Preferred memorials are to the Church or Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home.
