Obituary

RUTHIE MAE COOPER, 76, departed this life on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. She was born on April 11, 1948, in Cruger, Mississippi, to the late Oliver L. Sr. and Elouise Cooper. She was preceded in death by her brother Oliver L. (Terry) Cooper, Jr. and her uncle, Rev. Robert A. Cooper, Jr.

From a young age, Ruthie embraced her faith, finding Christ under the guidance of the late Rev. Jessie White. She later joined her uncle, Rev. Robert A. Cooper, Jr. at Greater Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in her spiritual journey.

In 1952, Ruthie moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where her life unfolded with remarkable achievements. She attended Central High School, graduating with a commitment to education that led her to Indiana University. There, she obtained a bachelor's degree in education, further pursuing higher education at Ivy Tech. Ruthie's passion for teaching was evident as she dedicated her career to working with children. She was not only an educator but also a mentor and planner, creating after-school programs to provide safe havens and a nurturing environment. Her commitment to education, hard work and dedication were matched by her radiant smile, that brightened the lives of those who encountered presence.

Ruthie Mae Cooper was a woman full of love and compassion, always prioritizing her family. She cherished spending time with them, always ready to lend a helping hand. Ruthie had a variety of interests, including a love for dogs, shopping, reading, traveling, and collecting figurines. Yet, her true joy was the time she spent with her family.

Ruthie leaves behind a loving family, including three sisters; Barbara Jean Lattimore, Ollie Mae McLaurin, and Sheila Cooper; five (5) brothers, Milton Cooper, Robert (Mary) Cooper, and Arthur Cooper, Dudley Cooper and Jermaine Cooper. Her longtime partner and friend of forty (40) years, Neal Baker, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family, will continue to cherish her memory.

Ruthie Mae Cooper's life was defined by her unwavering dedication to her family, her students, and her faith. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Greater Mt Ararat Baptist Church, 2111 Edsall Ave., Ft. Wayne, IN 46803 with visitation from 12 pm to 1pm.

Entombment will take place in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne, IN.
