Vern O. Smith, 91, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Grey Stone Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Wayne, IN. Born in Fort Wayne, IN, Vern was a son of the late Vern O. and Brooxie (Loman) Smith. He served honorably in the United States Army. Vern married Marlene Smith on March 26, 1983 at First Baptist Church in Delray Beach, FL and she survives. He worked as a Funeral Director until his retirement in 1995. Vern attended Salem United Church of Christ in Fort Wayne, IN. He was a member and officer of the Elks in Florida. Vern is survived by his wife; children, Roxane (Don) Fry and Douglas (Diana) Smith; step-children, Katherine Korn and Dennis Korn; grandchildren, Amanda (Ollie) Kook, Andrew (Kelsey) Smith, and Elizabeth (Taylor) Paul; step-grandchildren, Reid (Mila) Starn and Daniel Starn; great-grandchildren, Emma Kook, Henry Kook, Charlotte Paul, Clara Paul and Elias Smith; and step-grandchild, Alex Starn. Vern was also preceded in death by his sisters, Doris Feasby and Wanda Canfield; half brother, Will Hartleroad; half sister, Laurie Garland; and step-daughter, Karen Starn. Funeral service 11:00 am, Friday, November 10, 2023 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Greater Indiana Chapter.
