Walter "Tom" Leamon, 83, of Fort Wayne, passed away Monday July 30, 2007 at Hospice Home. Born January 16, 1924 on a farm in Penn Township, Jay County, he was one of five children born to Preston and Vada Leamon. He was a WWII Veteran serving as a Staff Sergeant in the 101st Airborne in the liberation of Holland and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. He married his childhood sweetheart, Carolyn Whitacre in 1946 and were married for 64 years. Their children are Kerry, Galen, and Cherlyn. The family moved to Fort Wayne in 1964. Tom worked in the meat business for 41 years and retired as a federal meat inspector in 1987. While living in Pennville, he served on the VFD, Jay County''s first school board, the Lions Club, and as President of the Park Board. He was a member of the American Legion Post 482 and served as Post Commander in the 1950''s. He held many positions in the Pennville United Methodist Church and later the Waynedale United Methodist Church. Following retirement, Tom and Carolyn resided in Bradenton, Florida for 10 years before returning to Fort Wayne where they were active at Sonrise at Aboite United Methodist Church. "Tom loved volunteer service anywhere he was needed, all outdoor activities, sports, sports, and more sports". He is survived by a son, Galen (Irene) Leamon; daughter, Cher (Diana) Jackson; sisters, Mary Jane Upchurch, and Janice Nelson both of Muncie; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Leamon; son, Kerry (Fayellen) Leamon; brother, Joe Leamon; and a sister, Barbara Sousa.
